The workbench
Think by making.
Small experiments that run in your browser. Pick one. It opens here, on the bench.
Bench 01 / Beneath the interface
How software runs.
Scheduling, compiled code, and search, one small view at a time.
Bench 02 / Many hands
Building together.
People and AI change one piece of work. Watch the work stay whole.
Who adapts?
Two agents plan changes to one made-up repository. See how far apart the plans are, and which agent adapts.
Simulation / a made-up repositoryPlan A
active · normal priority · planned second · small change · the incoming agent
Plan B
active · normal priority · planned first · small change
gitring
Distance close: 0 to 3
- 0Lines overlap, or both plans change the same function.
- 1One plan changes a function that the other plan uses.
- 2Both plans change the same file.
- 3The files are one import apart.
- 4The files are two imports apart.
- 5The plans have no relation.
Rules
- R1, does not apply: no agent merged.
- R2, does not apply: no agent waits to merge against active work.
- R3, decides: Agent A changes the signature of formatPrice. Agent B adapts.
- R5, not reached: high priority continues.
- R4, not reached: the earlier plan continues.
- R6, not reached: the smaller change adapts. If the sizes are equal, the incoming agent adapts.
Confidence 0.85. Below 0.55, a person decides when the risk is to behaviour.
Change request to Agent B. Agent A continues.
The real gitring asks an AI model about close plans. Here, fixed rules decide. gitring uses the same rules when the AI fails. gitring also finds two plans for the same task. This toy leaves that out.
gitring compares two plans in this order. The first match gives the distance.
- Lines: edits less than three lines apart overlap.
- Functions: both plans change one function, or one plan changes a function that the other uses.
- Files: both plans change one file.
- Imports: the files are one or two imports apart, in either direction.
Distance 0 to 3 is close, so gitring checks the pair. Plans at distance 4 or 5 need no check. A plan that moved closer since the last check also gets a check.
- What this shows
- Distance comes from the code: lines, functions, files, and imports. Plans far apart need no check. When two plans collide, one agent gets a change request, and the other continues.
- Honest note
- The real gitring asks an AI model about close plans. Here, fixed rules decide. gitring uses the same rules when the AI fails.
Bench 03 / Things in motion
A ball and an arm.
A cricket delivery and a robot arm. Each one moves by a small rule.
Field notes
The experiments run locally in your browser.
Small enough to inspect.
